The Hidebehind

The Hidebehind is a nocturnal fearsome critter from American folklore that preys upon humans who wander the woods. Early loggers, when they failed to return to camp, blamed the Hidebehind for their disappearances. As its name suggests, the Hidebehind possesses the ability to conceal itself. When an observer tries to look directly at it, the creature swiftly hides behind an object or the observer, rendering itself invisible. The Hidebehind uses this skill to stalk human prey without detection and launches surprise attacks. Victims, including lumberjacks and forest-goers, are dragged back to the creature’s lair to be devoured. The creature primarily subsists on its victims’ intestines and has a strong aversion to alcohol, which serves as an effective repellent. Tales of the Hidebehind may have originated as explanations for strange forest noises at night. Despite early accounts describing Hidebehinds as large and powerful animals, no one has ever been able to see them directly.
